Australian listed health IT group, iSOFT has signed up its fifth German customer to deploy its Lorenzo next generation health information system solution.
Under the three-year contract worth $1.9 million, the iSOFT group (ASX:ISF) will this year install its ClinicCentre HIS solution, and gradually replace individual modules with Lorenzo functionality as it becomes available, for Klinikum Saarbrücken, one of Germanys major general hospitals. Located at Saarbrücken, the state capital of Saarland, Klinikum Saarbrücken is a 600-bed acute care, teaching hospital for the University of Saarland, employing 2,200 staff and treating 110,000 patients a year.
iSOFTs managing director Central Europe, Peter Herrmann, said Klinikum Saarbrücken was an existing customer for iSOFTs RadCentre radiology information system, and, as one of Germanys major general hospitals, was renowned for using the latest technology in medicine and patient care.
Its decision to adopt Lorenzo is further recognition that we have the right strategy; one that offers customers a clear path to migrate to a next-generation solution at a pace that suits their needs and budgets, while building on existing investments.
Replacement of the hospitals existing Nexus inpatient system with iSOFTs ClinicCentre solution is due to be completed in September this year, and Herrmann says the first Lorenzo component is expected to be installed in 2010.
Based on Lorenzo technology, the iSOFT Collaboration Suite (iCS) portal will allow GPs access to hospital patient records using standard Web browsers. Lorenzo is a next-generation suite of healthcare applications based on service-oriented architecture. iCS allows the secure exchange of patient information between care providers to improve collaboration between care teams.

A Letterkenny company is a finalist in the Prove your Idea Awards, The Awards are aimed at acknowledging business ideas which are innovative and have a great chance of success. Paul McNulty’s Letterkenny based company Trinity Innovations won the BMW final for its innovative digital magazine software 3DIssue.

Trinity Innovations is a web development and software company that specialise in the publishing area. Paul has developed a software solution for publishing houses which allows readers to view publications as a true 3 D experience. It’s called 3DIssue.com. For example, turning over virtual pages (page flip), moving over the page and selecting different sections. The software recognises intuitive nature of reading in a virtual environment. A simple and innovative idea which is already attracting a lot of attention from publishers. Myhome.ie are already using it.

Paul McNulty is originally from Letterkenny and has been working in multi media development for 11 years. For three of those years he worked in NYC. “I couldn’t get the local papers in NYC and could only access static websites. I missed the interactive experience. I travelled every week to the Bronx to get the local Donegal newspapers” he says.
Upon returning to Ireland, Paul worked in the publishing industry for a couple of years as an account manager. It was during this time that paul realised the value in assisting publishers reduce the lead-time it took in introducing potential advertisers to their publications
“As a Web / Multimedia Developer by Trade, I began to work on a web- based solution. I have been developing this part-time since 2005 and began developing it full-time in April 2006. Digital Magazines are not just a great way to reduce lead-time in introducing advertisers to publications but also for reducing costs, increasing sales through online subscriptions, generating value through back issue sales, increasing circulation figures via global distribution and even designing new concept publications at low cost.”
Trinity Innovations is one of the companies currently on the CEIM Enterprise Development Programme which is offered by the Institute of Technology Sligo and Letterkenny Institute of Technology, in collaboration with Border Action, Enterprise Ireland and Údarás na Gaeltachta. The programme is now recruiting for its fourth year and is targeted at people with innovative business ideas (which have high commercial and export potential) who live or wish to relocate to the North West region. Through the programme Trinity Innovations has been able to avail of free office space at the BDC at Letterkenny Institute for the duration of the programme.
“I am pleased to be a regional finalist it’s great to get that vote of confidence This is only the first stage of the product, there are many more applications. Convergence of technologies means that the 3DIssue is a lucrative apporach for publishers and it means a better experience for expats and readers in general.” Says Paul.
“There are about 27 digital magazine service providers in the global market today, through the CEIM Program I was enable to conduct extensive research on the market, my competitors and also the needs of publishers. These service providers charge publishers on a per issue basis and the fees can vary widely. Publishers believe that the costs of such a service outweigh any savings sales they would generate from going digital. Through the CEIM Enterprise Development Programme, I was able to meet and speak with specialists that assisted be in researching, marketing and commercialising my software.
What makes 3DIssue unique is that it will be the first solution that will allow publishers to create their own digital magazines that will include all the functionality that any service provider offers.
Paul explains, “Through CEIM I was able to spend time developing an application that would allow publishers to create their own digital editions in-house without the need of hiring external services. 3DIssue is designed to not only allow publishers to create digital editions in a matter of minutes but also provides 3 different formats to view publications and also add extra interactivity to these digital editions through 3D Issue Manager. This is due out in June. The software allows you to add tools such as keyword searching, blogging, hyperlinks to advertisers websites, dynamic printing, letters to the editor, archiving back issues, digital video and digital audio. All very exciting.”
So could Donegal be the new Silicon Valley?
“Why not, the beauty of computers and software is you can be anywhere. With a good idea, the right expertise and good support the world is your oyster. And that’s definitely here in Donegal.” Laughs Paul.

Let's imagine, for a second, that you're a fiftysomething Canadian male. You might be at the top of your career, your kids are finally out of the house and you're starting to dig yourself out of the financial mess that the economic crisis brought. While your waistline is a bit thicker and your hair a little thinner than it was a decade ago, you like to believe that it lends a distinguished look that commands a certain respect.
Things might look good on the outside, however, your insides might tell a different story. Yes, cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar are all health issues you watch carefully at your annual physical, but what about those nagging issues that no one really likes to talk about? Really, who wants to chat about prostate health or erectile dysfunction? Even if you do have the guts to bring it up, can anything be done to prevent this stuff from happening?

Eating for a healthy prostate

If you're part of the cohort of ageing male boomers, then there is a good chance you were up last night to go to the bathroom - maybe several times. With ageing comes a gradual enlargement of the prostate gland, which can press on the urethra, ultimately restricting urine flow - or even blocking it entirely. This condition, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is very common in older men, and while it may be relatively harmless for some, it can also be a precursor for prostate cancer, and therefore should be monitored carefully by your physician.

From a dietary perspective, there haven't been enough well-controlled studies on any nutrients or supplements to be able to draw definitive conclusions, but there is evidence that nutrients such as lycopene (a component released when tomatoes are cooked), the herbal supplement saw palmetto (at a dose of around 500 mg per day), ground flaxseed (two tablespoons per day), soy foods and a low-fat diet can all keep levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA) - a marker of prostatic growth under control. Less convincing is the evidence that taking vitamin E or selenium can prevent prostate cancer; in fact, the large SELECT study, examining the link between both supplements and the development of prostate cancer, was halted last year after it failed to produce any significant results.

Diet and erectile dysfunction

The path by which one develops erectile dysfunction actually has many of the same points of origin as heart disease, which has resulted in some researchers calling ED something of a harbinger of cardiovascular disease. In other words, if the plumbing isn't working down there, it could be a sign it's not working somewhere else, too.

Taking a pill to manage ED is one option, but the best bet is to also take a serious look at diet and lifestyle. Researchers in Italy have demonstrated that losing a bit of weight (about 10% of your initial weight, or about 20 lbs on a 200 lb man) and adopting a Mediterranean-type diet, can improve sexual function in about one-third of men with ED, without the use of medications. Need a refresher on the Mediterranean diet? Here are the key components:
-Choose fish or lean cuts of white meat, like chicken or turkey, more often. Consume red meats sparingly (preferably no more than once or twice per week), and when you do, choose lean cuts.
-Consume plenty of green vegetables and fruits, especially berries.
-Get healthy fats from nuts, olives, olive oil and avocados on a daily basis.
-Choose whole grains over white or refined grains.
-Dairy products are OK, especially yogourt. Eat cheese in moderation.
-And finally, don't forget the legumes, such as chick peas (think: hummus).

While eating this type of diet might be a big change for some, there is much to be gained from slow, steady progress. That might mean adding ground flaxseed to your cereal for prostate health, or choosing yogourt with nuts and berries for breakfast instead of a bagel with cream cheese. It turns out that eating this way can not only help keep your waistline stable and your heart healthy, it might also revitalize your love life, too. And that's good news for men and women alike.
